Spring 2025 - Creative Writings [from Intro to Creative Writing class]

Screenplay Section

As of Fall 2024, during my senior year, I took on an upper level screenwriting class. For the 30 pages I have written (including the beat sheet) for the first time, I put together this powerful story titled "The Path of Yeumi". Although this course might have been difficult at times, I couldn't be grateful in taking on creative risks like these (that are outside of camera work). I hope people take away from the screenplay that the challenges that follow from the perspectives of any Asian American consist of wanting to fit in (as a common want for the American dream) as well as facing challenges of bullying.

Logline: A Korean American artist opens up about her
struggles leading to how she fought for her life.

Synopsis:

Act 1

  • In the present day, Yeumi, a Korean American female artist in her mid-20s, speaks with Jonathan, an event director. Yeumi shares her story as she talks about the memories from when she moved from Korea with her family to Minnesota.

  • Flashback: Ten-year-old Yeumi gets bullied by a white boy and she meets Danielle, a Chinese American girl who stands up for her. They play on the swings together.

    • By the time Yeumi is 12, she sits at a table by herself at the lunch cafeteria in middle school. Erica, a blonde girl, takes a look at Yeumi’s lunch and gets grossed out. She chucks her bento box container to the floor. Danielle stands up for Yeumi as she picks it up. Yeumi and Danielle go to the table where Danielle’s friends, Kiya and Jinhee sit.

    • Yeumi shows her presentation of her family tree on a cardboard presentation with images of her family. Erica bullies her again.

    • Yeumi decides to dedicate herself to taking self-defense
lessons along with her friends at Yi’s Wellness and Self
Defense, a gym run by Danielle’s mom.

    • One evening, when she comes home, Hyungji punishes her
by lashing with a wooden stick.

Act 2

  • Back to the present: Yeumi shows off her back scars to Jonathan. They go outside for a walk right by the Lakefront Trail as Yeumi continues talking about her life.

  • Flashback: 15-year-old Yeumi notices Alec, another white guy getting her attention during math class, but has no interest in him.

    • Yeumi gets picked on again during gym class, but this time, she gets targeted by Tess and her best friend, Sarah. The volleyball
hits Yeumi on the nose, leading her to bleed.

    • In the locker rooms, Sarah and Tess tease Yeumi, but
Jinhee and Kiya stand up for her.

    • At the cafeteria, Yeumi enjoys her lunch and draws in her sketchbook. She meets Isaiah, an African American football player as they have an unexpected lunch date. On Valentine’s Day weekend, Yeumi and Isaiah have their first date at a pizza place.

    • One summer evening, Yeumi and Isaiah have dinner at her house with her family. Hyungji drags him out of his chair, but
Isaiah releases his hand away from him. Yeumi admits that she loves him. Soomin steps in, but Hyungji pushes her to the wall. Her body hits a cabinet as a vase falls and lacerates her right leg. Hyungji runs to the kitchen counter and pulls out a belt. The belt aims at Yeumi instead of Isaiah as blood drips from her face and down her back. Yeumi and Soomin get rushed to the hospital and the police arrest Hyungji.

    • At the hospital, Eunice, Yeumi's aunt, helps out Yeumi and Soomin.

Act 3

  • Jonathan becomes moved as Yeumi reveals that her father was abusive to her family. She shows another scar in the shape of an L near her left eye.

  • Suddenly, Yeumi gets a call from her sister, Grace, saying that their mom got into a car accident.

  • Yeumi rushes to the hospital room and reunites with
Eunice, her mom, and her sisters. Soomin reveals the truth to Yeumi about what happened after the night of the incident. Soomin hands each of them a necklace with a koi fish charm and a jade bead as she slowly dies in the hospital bed. Devastated, Yeumi, Grace, and Rachel admit their love and forgiveness and join Eunice in grief.

Short Screenplay Samples - Chainsaw Cinema (Highland Park, IL)

Here are some short scenes that I got to write from summer 2024 when I got to know Chainsaw Cinema, a small production company in Highland Park, IL.

Essays - Favorable Collection from DePauw classes

In this section, here are some of my favorite writing material that I have written over the course of my time at DePauw. My all time goal is to inspire others like how my mentors have inspired me. Creative writing has challenged me to take risks and open up about experiences as well as talk about topics based on media, gender and sexuality, and cultural representation because it is like having a voice that you have the courage to use. â€‹

  • True story, because as a child, at school, when people said I couldn't write, it infuriated me. That led me to wanting to prove people wrong aside from just being on stage, presenting on social media, and filmmaking.

Do not hesitate to take a read at what essays I have written for certain courses that I find as my best presentable work. Let me know what you think and I hope you enjoy.

Creative Writings - Original Prompts

I've been told that I cannot creatively write. But really... I can, and I will!

Collaboration Steps - What To Do Before, During, and After

Have you wanted to do a collaborative video with friends or people you know, but do not know where to begin? No worries!

You can read here for more. Hopefully these tips will help you out on what to do before, during, and after filming.

Keep in mind:

  • Make sure the people are okay with being filmed. Be respectful if some people are not okay with it. Come up with some alternative roles for them (i.e. behind the camera - recommended).

  • I suggest planning your idea out by simply writing it on paper or a document (that can be shared among the people you choose) while discussing. Explain to them about what to expect.

  • It is best to say affirmations to those that feel hesitant or scared - that way it can help boost their confidence.

  • Focus more on being creative or the creating process as well as the fun, not who is watching.

How To Work Around Creativity Block

Got creativity block? It's okay. We all have been through that. It can happen when we get stuck on an idea while we are creating something.

Read here to find out how you can work your way around it. Hope those tips will help you out on being more creative.

Keep in mind:

  • It is recommended to keep your ideas in a notebook or anywhere that can be easily accessed (including on a document).

  • As you go on about planning your ideas, make sure you are answering the 5 Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why), "How?", and "So What?"

  • There is no right or wrong way to do this. You can choose between 1-3 of the methods listed on this document. Have fun with brainstorming and let your creativity play the game.

Let's Talk: Common Ground

Most people use common ground when it comes to getting to know new individuals. There are also other ways that common ground can be used such as

  • Identifying target audience - knowing what your viewers and you (as a creator) both are interested in

  • Making decisions

  • Brainstorming creative ideas for projects & plans

  • Going to events / planning for events

  • Answering get to know people (mostly through open ended questions as well as letting them share their experiences)

  • Reflecting on memories

  • Telling stories - based on what you and the other person have done (that is considered memorable)

  • Learning new skills

Most of the time, it varies on the situation. Ask yourself: what connections are there between you and (___)?

Anyhow, come take a look and see what I have come up with in understanding common ground.

With this writing, I talk about how it felt having my last final fall semester as a senior at DePauw. As I entered my earlier 20s, I have learned so much about not only myself, but also ideas of vulnerability and how it has been helping me with my creative life today.

Take a look at what I shared in terms of memorable highlights, words to describe this time, things I discovered, creative risks I took, quotes from film mentors, and more.

Hope you take some time to understand that writing might have been tough (speaking from a neurodivergent point of view), but what matters the most is not worrying too much whether people like it or not.
